Rifle Tapestry Emery/Elisalex

This was my fourth Rifle Paper co fabric purchase, but for me this print ‘Tapestry’ felt a little less Rifle, I think because it’s really reminiscent of Strawberry Thief. However despite the similarities, this print is bang up to date, with nude, denim blue and perky flashes of orange which make it equally relevant in Autumn as it is in Spring or Summer.

Because of the 70s vibe of this print, I really wanted to make the fit quite current but I have to admit it didn’t turn out as I expected. I used Elisalex by By Hand London for the bodice and Emery by Christine Haynes for the skirt.

Having already made a dress in Strawberry Thief, I knew with this print that I wanted the skirt to be straight to show the pattern the right way up, so the Emery pattern was ideal.

In hindsight I should have made a muslin for the Elisalex as I hadn’t sewn that pattern before and had a few fit issues. If I’d have done that I would have realised earlier how low the neckline was turning out. Although I actually love the final fit, for me it just isn’t right for this fabric. I think it would suit a high neckline and long sleeves to really make an impact.

However obviously that’s not going to stop me from wearing it. It is after all a dress that fits, is easy to wear and has animals on it. So it checks a lot of boxes for me.
